auto transmission

What is the max horsepower that you can put on an auto transmission?

Im just wondering if there was a limited amount of hp that you can put on an auto trans.

Depends on the transmission. A Muncie M22 is better than a 350 turbo and can handle more torque and horsepower. The way its made is more of a variable than if its automatic or manual.

Is it possible to put an auto stick transmission in a manual Beetle?

I have a 1979 Volkswagen Super Beetle. It’s a convertible and I love it! I am learning how to drive the manual transmission and having a bit of trouble. I have heard that Beetles had an auto stick transmission in the late 60’s to early 70’s. Is it possible to put one of these auto stick transmissions into this Beetle? How much work is involved in something like this?

yeah its possible and pretty simple and straight-forward. the hardest part will be finding a good auto-stick transaxle since they are pretty hard to come by. i did the opposite swap about 1.5 years ago. you will need the vacuum canister, the tranny, the shifter and shift rod that goes to the auto-stick tranny, torque converter, pressure plate and flywheel, and auto-stick pedal cluster. the rest is a simple swap of the parts.

Consumer’s Negligence Causes Auto Part Disorder – Car Care Council

The Car Care Council (CCC) reported on January 11 this year that results of vehicle check-up events during Car Care Aware Fairs across the US in April and October 2006 revealed that consumer’s negligence is the main cause auto part disorders.

According to them, nearly 9 out of 10 vehicles need service or parts, underscoring the huge untapped DIY and DIFM sales opportunities for the automotive aftermarket. The unsatisfactory condition of vehicles also reinforces the continued need for consumer education about the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair.

Car Care Council Executive Director Rich White said “Vehicle check-up events are typically the focus of Car Care Aware Fairs sponsored by repair shops, parts stores, distributors in cooperation with local vocational schools, media, civic groups and others. While these events are free to consumers and serve as community-relations builders, most aftermarket businesses who participate experience an increase in sales and customers as a result.”

In an analysis of nearly 1,000 vehicle inspection forms, submitted from event coordinators in 16 states, results showed 88 percent of the vehicles checked during National Car Care Month in April and Fall Car Care Month in October needed parts replacement, service or fluids. The top problem areas were motor oil, windshield wipers, air filters, belts and hoses and lights.

Upon checking lubricants and fluids, the three top failure rates were: low, overfull or dirty motor oil at 30 percent, inadequate washer fluid levels at 28 percent, and low, leaky or dirty coolant at 28 percent. transmission, brake, power steering and clutch fluids were also checked and had failure rates of 26 percent and below.

Approximately 15 percent of vehicles had front windshield wiper failures and 9 percent needed service to rear wipers.

At least one belt was reported as unsatisfactory in 22 percent of the vehicles inspected and 14 percent required at least one new hose. New air filters were needed in 25 percent of the vehicles, while 8 percent needed new PVC filters. The “check engine” light was on in 8 percent of the vehicles.

Battery cables, clamps and terminals needed maintenance in 17 percent of the vehicles inspected, while 9 percent of the batteries were not properly held down. Eleven percent had either a green, dark or clear/yellow charge indicator light.

Improperly inflated tires were found on 20 percent of the cars and 11 percent had worn tread and were in need of replacement.

The leading failure rates for vehicle lights/vision were license plate lights at 18 percent, brake lights at 10 percent, and side markers at 8 percent. Clutch parts were also among the top failure rates. And like any other auto part, can be maintained by car owners. Poor maintenance of the gearbox clutch and worm shaft assembly can increase machine cycling, resulting in costly repairs and pinsetter downtime. The gearbox clutch should be disassembled and checked once a year for worn facings, bad bearings, worn clutch shoes and proper lubrication. The worm shaft splines should also be checked for wear and proper lubrication. Checking them regularly should also be a great time to fix any oil leaks coming from bad gaskets or worm shaft assembly seals.

Knowing Your Dependable Surplus Auto Engines

Auto engines are very vital in the completion of any vehicle.  Every aspect of the automobile industry had focused on providing customers the quality parts that you need.  While you want to lessen your cost when it comes to purchasing components for your rebuilt motor, the trade would always listen to your needs.  On this line, a lot of companies have already diversified their businesses by offering you a wide range of selection from brand new to surplus parts.  The latter are considered as good as new and here is how each part could work for you.

Air conditioners.  When you are buying second-hand car models, oftentimes the air conditioners could no longer be utilized.  The only option you have is to purchase another which could fit the specifications of your automobile.  Your dependable surplus auto engines under this category would mean that they could fit your car or SUV according to your comfort.  You would not only spend less but you could definitely get more for your rebuilt motor.  Large inventory catalogs will always incorporate blower motors or accumulators under this classification.

General auto parts.  Under this auto engines category, you will find brakes and the ignition system.  These are considered as the most important support for your automobiles.  To make it dependable for your rebuilt motor, you must see to it that it is reasonably priced.  Reasonable pricing covers all aspects wherein your vehicle type will be considered.  Just specify the manufacturer of your car or SUV and the year it was launched in the market.  These are considered essential in making a purchase so that you will not encounter any future problems.

Transmissions.  There are two kinds of transmission for your auto engines namely manual and automatic.  If you purchased a vehicle with a manual transmission, you could always transform it into an automatic type.  Your service provider may not require you to convert your transportation all at one time. The company would rather suggest that you could convert one part now and alter another portion later.  Once you assure them that you would come back and you are satisfied with their service, they may even promise you a discount for your next visit.

Radiators.  Just like any other auto engines, radiators are considered to be important especially for cooling down your engines under very extreme conditions.  This could help the engine of your rebuilt motor last for a longer period of time.  Surprisingly, once you get to purchase a surplus radiator on its best form, you may increase the life of your vehicle and have it run an extra 150,000 miles.  Once you see any leak in this engine part, you should always consider replacing it immediately so as not to affect your car’s system.

There are other reasons you could consider for buying your auto engines for your rebuilt motor.  You may not actually get the exact value you are looking for since the parts are surplus but you would at least have your expectations met.  Another good quality of dependable surplus engine parts is the fact that despite saving on cost, you will always get the results you want.  A lot of companies will make advertisements that if you are not satisfied with their products, you could always return the goods within a specified period of time.

How do you change the fluid in your auto transmission?

I have a 2008 ACURA TL 3.2 base model. Would changing the transmission fluid be hard?

Also what transmission fluid would be best to use.

Please don’t give me asnwers like read the manual because there are better options.

Thanks

Most Japanese cars have a drain plug, just like for the oil.

If it does, drain it, measure the amount that came out, and refill. Drive it for a few hundred miles, then do it again. You can repeat one more time if you like. Driving it flushes the old fluid out of the converter.

Volvo’s Comeback to the Montreal International Auto Show

Volvo, the world’s most renowned car manufacturer when it comes to safety standards, have been absent from the Montreal International Auto Show for the past couple of years stating that the absence is because the auto show was not part of their marketing strategy. The company started their absence at the said auto show back in 2005 with other car manufacturers like Jaguar and Land Rover. Last year was the same and Volvo sure was not showing off their wares at the Montreal auto show. But this year, the company returned to unveil their current lineup of cars including the star of their show, the all-new Volvo C30.

The company’s primary reason for returning to the auto show is to launch its new two-door, four-seater car. This new vehicle is the smallest in its lineup of safety systems packed cars. Another factor that may have made the company return to the auto show is the drop in its sales in Canada which was down 15 per cent. Though the company was absent in the auto show for the past two years, they claimed that they have not ignored the Montreal and Quebec market and they have used alternative marketing strategies in the said regions. But the release of their new car has prompted the Ford Motor Company owned luxury brand to get back to their original marketing strategy which is to show off their new car at the Montreal International Auto Show.

The star of the company’s show at the said grand auto event is its Volvo C30 which was designed by Simon Lamarre who is fittingly a native of Ste. Therese. The car was designed to be a compact sized car for those busy people living in cities. It uses the same styling elements taken from Volvo’s Safety Concept Car which was the highlight of the company’s entry to the 2001 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The concept car has received much praise for its design that the company sees it fit that their new entry to the premium compact market should have the same styling elements.

The cutting edge design will be complemented by a 2.4-liter 5-cylinder in-line engine that can produce 170 horsepower for the 2.4i base model. This engine will be coupled to either a five-speed manual or automatic transmission. A souped up engine would come along on the T5 model; the model will have a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine with a maximum output of 218 horsepower capable enough to compete with the best in its class and will either come with a six-speed manual or a five-speed manual transmission. Both engines, of course, would be carrying that reputation for having high performance Volvo engine parts and other reliable parts for every system in the car.

As the car is from Volvo, it would surely be coming packed with tons of safety features that have previously been employed by cars already being mass produced by the company. These safety features will no doubt raise the car’s stock against heavy competition in its class which includes the much praised Audi A3, the Volkswagen GTI and the Mini Cooper.

Automatic Transmission Autos Could Kill your Kid

Without you knowing it, your kid could be turning the ignition on to listen to a piece of comforting music on your car’s radio. Bad thing when you have automatic transmission – the simple act of turning the ignition could cost your kid’s very life.

Between manual transmission and automatic transmission autos, the big difference is that the latter has no clutch pedal and gear shift. Once, the transmission is put into drive, the whole thing then is automatic. The automatic transmission with torque converter and manual transmission with its clutch accomplish almost precisely the same thing however they do it in totally diverse ways.

Their primary task is to allow the engine to function in its slim range of speeds while delivering an extensive range of output speeds. Another difference between the two is that manual transmissions locks and unlocks various sets of gears to the output shaft to yield the desired gear ratios; while in automatic transmissions same set of gears generates all various gear ratios.

As a fact, an automatic automobile could slip into gear even when the motor is off and the driver’s foot is stepping on the brake. The only thing that has to be done is to turn the key in the ignition. The result includes the accessory mode which allows occupants to listen to the car’s radio, turn on the lights, or roll down a window. However, having the accessory mode is not at all times pleasure for it could mean accidentally shifting the vehicle into gear. This becomes a fatal problem when the one who turned the ignition is a kid who knows nothing about the functions of a vehicle.

According to experts, when the vehicle starts moving, the kid could become scared and jump out of the car and get run over. Statistics shows that at least 100 children have been injured or killed this way. Consumer groups have recommended the use of a simple safety device that would prevent automatic cars from inadvertently shifting into gear. But some automakers have not integrated the feature to their lineup yet. This is why millions of vehicles on the road these days could hurt or, worst, kill kids.

Automakers have known the metes and bounds about perils of accidental gear shifts in automatic cars. At present, there are over four million Suburbans and millions of other cars, which lack a safety feature called break transmission shift interlock device (BTSI). The BTSI prevents automobiles from shifting into gear, except when the driver’s foot is on the brake. Consumer advocates said the part costs less than $15. Almost every foreign vehicle is equipped with the BTSI however advocates said that Detroit lags behind.

“In general, we’re seeing that the General Motors, the Ford, the Chrysler products, it’s kind of spotty which vehicles have it and which models don’t,” said Janette Fennell, president of the nonprofit safety organization, Kids and Cars.

On a positive note, automakers – both domestic and foreign – have agreed to a voluntary installation of BTSI in all their vehicles by 2010. So far, models that are not equipped with BTSI in all key modes include Saturn ION, Cadillac CTS,Pontiac GTO, Chevrolet Express, GMC Savannah, Chevrolet Equinox, Pontiac Torrent, Saturn VUE, Chevrolet Silverado Classic, GMC Sierra Classic – all from General Motors. According to the automaker, “All GM vehicles will have Brake Transmission Shift Interlock in Accessory mode by 2008, two years ahead of the requirement.”

The BMW X3 and Z4 also do not feature BTSI. BMW said it will be ready for the 2010 agreement. Ford, on the other hand did not give a list of vehicles without the BTSI feature. The company just said 10 percent of its 2007 vehicles do not have BTSI devices. The Jeep Liberty under the Chrysler Group is also not equipped with the auto feature. But according to Chrysler, “The Jeep Liberty will get an updated BTSI when the vehicle is refreshed, which is in the near future.” Enthusiasts hope that the automaker should not only concentrate on Chrysler cold air intake, brakes, style, and advertising campaigns but also on BTSI as well.
